Sometimes it just doesn’t seem like you’re getting anywhere when you practice saxophone. You’ll even sound worse on some days than you did the day before…..
There are so many options of things to practice – scales, fingering exercises, long tones, ballads, articulation, phrasing, etc.
Tough to know what you need to focus on at the moment while you’re practicing saxophone sometimes.
Over the years I have taken private sax lessons, attended week-long (sometimes two weeks) music classes and camps, gone to classes at university, played in groups and learned music in some other formats.
The week long, intensive classes are a lot of fun and you learn some things.
But in terms of getting better at music and really working on ideas, I feel like it works better to get a simple lesson, have some space to practice it and figure it out for yourself, and then be able to talk to the instructor and play around with it after spending time on it.
So you’ll get a short lesson each day and be able to try it and then get feedback from me.
Each lesson will be sent to your email box.
I would like to work with more saxophone players and help out, so while a saxophone lesson usually costs around $60. For this class, you’ll pay less than half of that. My experiences helping people with saxophone have been a lot of fun though, so I’m assuming it will be cool to work with you on helping you practice sax.
The ‘Saxophone Practice Challenge’….
Thirty days of ideas for practicing saxophone, since sometimes you don’t know where to go with what you’re practicing!
It covers the fundamentals and also goes into some more advanced material. And feel free to contact me at any time if things are too hard or not challenging enough and I’ll get you some things to work on.

About the fourth day-
Hi Neal,
Very good advice!! Practising has to be enjoyable with no distractions. However, practising with others is fun. Playing together is still practising. I have a friend who takes his sax and music to the town centre to play to the crowds – they love it!! and leave their appreciation in the form of loose change in his case!! Now that is practising and getting paid for it. That has to be the best way of practising.
Keep on rocking,
Anthony
One week into the class-
Hi Neal, A week has passed ,I have found your lessons immensely useful.
Have managed to play everyday almost an hour and I have kept an account on a day to day basis of what I did. The last lesson , was learn all the major and minor scales, for that I need some time. Thank you for explaining that scales and chords are the same thing. !
All the best Christie
