Man, Stan Getz sounds amazing! Here he is playing Soul Eyes in Munich, 1990.Many people have tried to get his sound….He’s best known for his work with Antonio Carlos Jobim, playing Brazillian jazz.
My theory (only a theory ) r.e….”the Getz sound” is this. Take a look at the shape of his face. It is kinda concave. Zoot Sims….same. Dick Parry……great british player…”dark side of the moon”….same shape face. To a large extent….shape of face, would i presume dictate shape of oral cavity. I reckon this concave…kinda melds itself around mpc. A natural advantage. I have a long narrow face…square and slim jaw. My oral cavity is the opposite. I play best on slim mpcs. Figures. So….profound insight….or the biggest load of bull? Answers on a postcard please….later….
Hey Adrian,
That’s interesting. I never tried to come up with a theory for his sound. That could be part of it. The physiology of a sax player definitely does affect the sound that comes out. I studied a bit of acoustics, maybe I’ll think about that a little more.
