Ernie Watts plays Round Midnight on tenor sax. Great player! I saw him with Kurt Elling at the Monterey Jazz Festival.

This is a gem thank you for sharing this. this site is getting better and better. those who play sax or any instrument will benefit from a visit and a view of these masters. i am listening to watts. what a great sound. makes me want to practice more. he makes each note count. clea upper register. even tone throughout the full range of the horn. did you hear the way he hit that high note. BAM, right on it. great intonation. saxplayers have to watch and listen happy chanukmas to mister watts and all the other great cats. check him out on arturo’s sandovals cd tribute to clifford brown. d.sanchez, ed calle also on this cd.

SIGURD RASCHER< SIGURD RASCHER>>OVERTONE OVERTONES OVERTONES<<>>. Dave liebman is a great teacher. There are many ways to play above the normal register of the horn. depending on the make you have to experiment. coltrane used many different fingerings which do not work for everyone, but may work for you. sometimes i just blow the note from the fumdamental. you can get any note from almost any note if you search . experiment. i was checking out mr. watts fingering for that high note. he seemed to finger the b key. i will not assume to know what else he did but you can bet i’ll try tommorow on my tenor. i may discover my own version. there are many ways. the on he used worked for him . he is a master. heeeeerrre’s johnny!!!!!!

Hey Neal,
I simply love Watts’ sound. But I don’t particularly like his articulation. Thanks a lot for this.
More importantly……I was geting very lazy and bored with playing. But after spending a lot of time on your web site, I took the horn out of the case and instead of using the easy Meyer mp, used the hard rubber Lackey and simply belted it out. I was making some great music and now am playing everyday again!!!
Thanks for giving me the motivation back mate. The utube stuf from Jerry Bergonzi also helped me experiment with mp/reed/placement and I just love it.
I also moved all my gear to a small room in the house where the acoustics are just fantastic!! You might advise some of your readers about this. The fed back sound can be a real joy and motivate the player!!
You are certainly spreading this wonderful thing called ‘music” to your readers
Again, thanks a mill.
