This question is relative to your expectations and practice commitment. First, you should realize that you will be a sax player for life. The most enjoyable part of playing sax is the journey. You can excel and improve for the rest of your life.
If you make a regular practice commitment of 30 minutes, 4 or 5 days a week, there is no reason you can’t have fun, and notice significant progress over just a few months. Many students are capable of playing some basic familiar tunes in just a few lessons.
Of course, reaching a professional level of proficiency requires deep commitment over a number of years. This is the case with any worthy endeavor.

Learning saxophone is similar to mastering anything else. Consistent practice done the right way will make you get better. In the beginning it seems like you progress faster because you are learning new notes on the saxophone, new ways of writing music on the page, so it will seem as if your progress slows sometimes.
