I took a jazz improvisation class at the local junior college when I was in high school.
The girl who played piano there was somewhat obsessed over the song “Red Clay” by Freddie Hubbard.
She said that she would always play that song with her combo.
Freddie Hubbard has written a lot of good stuff, but just like any musician you’ll like some things they do, but not everything (usually).
Have listened to it quite a few times and played over it a few times, great song. More recently.
The changes are the same as those from the song ‘Sunny’ by Bobby Heb.
Here’s a video of me playing a solo on alto sax over Red Clay.

Red Clay is one of the best tracks there is. The bass line is gorgeous, the solos are all phenomenal. Basically, it just jams like no other. One of my favorites. And as a sax player, Joe Henderson’s solo will always be top 3 best ever for me.

I have trouble with low C on the tenor, A#,B & C# come out easy, just for some reason C is difficult for me, Have tried a couple of saxes & I seem to have the same issue, Like a mental block. I’ve checked for leaks & everything looks fine, & if there was a leak , you would think it would affect the surrounding notes

Hey Dave,
Seems like the notes lower than C would be an issue if there was a leak. Might be in your head. Try imagining that you’re playing middle C as you play it and see if that turns out any differently.
