Mr. Woodtone playing saxophone with electronics out of Bristol. Looping is something I have seen done before with guitar, bass, etc. Hadn’t really seen it with saxophone. He also seems to know his way around the effects pedals, changing pitches and sounds with it. I know that takes some time to get comfortable with.
Thought it was pretty cool.
When I hear electronic music, it sometimes feels a little flat to me…. Other times it sounds good.
Combining the electronics with musicians is something I would like to see catch on.
What do you think?

Hey there Neal,
Love the blog! The video clip is interesting as well. I remember seeing Michael Brecker do this brilliantly with the Brecker Brothers back in the 90’s. Here in LA we’ve got a guy named Jon Brion who’s not a sax player, but sings and plays just about every other instrument on the planet simultaneously thanks to looping.
As for electronic music, I agree that a lot of it is shite, but I’ve actually had a lot of fun playing sax at DJ gigs, even wrote a 2-part blog post about it here: http://www.bestsaxophonewebsiteever.com/get-gigs-jamming-with-djs-part-1/
Anyhow, I just wanted to stop by and say hello to a fellow sax blogger, all the best from Los Angeles!

Hey Doron,
Brecker Brothers did some interesting stuff. Even Some Skunk Funk was a bit out there.
Catch you later

Dude, about Mr.Wood Tone, that was amazing, I mean the eletric sound and stuff, the techniques. Just very creative.

I think adding some tasty electronics can be very cool, but this was just too much… I kept waiting for him to play, & all he did was demonstrate all the different things he can do. It got very repetitious & began grating on me, so had to stop it before the end. Plus, he had all the background/beds up too loud, so if he did ever just play, it wouldn’t have been very prominent., no wonder everyone just kept walking by…
Neal says
haha, I think it’s how the style of music works, putting little pieces in gradually. Seems like you wouldn’t be one to hit up the rave scene!
Doron Orenstein says
@Steven Charles – Yeah, I agree, musically it wasn’t that interesting, it was more of a novelty than great music.

Right Doron, after awhile I wondered if it was simply an ad for the effects. I’d like to see him, or anyone use them in a musical way. I used a Morley Echo-Volume pedal throughout the mid-70s/80s, and while everyone could hear what I was doing, the effects never took over the show (other than an occasional solo section, but then it was more in a John Klemmer-ish fashion, still in the purpose of adding to the musical expression, not to show I have a cool toy)…
Neal says
I heard Joe Craven do a really cool version of Billy Jean on violin using an effects pedal. Haven’t played around with one yet myself.

Hey Neal ! Website has grown, Great! Picked up a couple of concepts.
What Mr. woodnote does IS a lot of fun !…as long as someone does not throw something at you. I think I will ask his advice…I`ve been craving for a Boss Super Shifter, think I`ll add a looper ( or whatever you call it). I`m a proffesional ” Wedding Solo/Saxes/flute/Singer”( I`m sure you have the idea), some loops would make people howl…you know, when anybody at a wedding has half a bottle inside they do amazing things !
Congratulations !

Hey Mike,
Thanks for stopping by. Seems like the loops might get some people into it, half a bottle couldn’t hurt, haha.
