In response to an e-mail sent in by Thomas, here is a brief
explanation of the flutter tongue effect on saxophone used sometimes in rock n roll
saxophone and other styles, but not typically in jazz.
I listened to the sound in one of the songs from the pulp fiction soundtrack. It’s
called “flutter tongue” – I remembered hearing it and about it
before, but hadn’t tried it myself, so I looked into it.
Seems like the basic idea is to do something like rolling r’s while
playing. Like you do in spanish words like ‘carro.’
I got it to work. I found that it’s easier with lower notes- I
played a low G. You roll an R and keep your tongue from touching
the reed. It didn’t sound fantastic at first, but I got it to come
out.
