Is there a short route to improvising? ie just use Pentatonics of that scale? Or, just use the Blues or Pentatonic Blues scale of that scale/key?

You can use the blues scales in some situations and not need to think about notes as much. That works in some situations, not all situations.
You do need to be musical at all times.
About the low notes, have you had a repair person check out the horn? Possible there is a leak. You could also have someone else try playing it (who plays better than you) to check.
